Ethical AI Guidelines

Ivy Divider

Artificial Intelligence is here—and it’s not going anywhere. As these powerful tools become more integrated into our daily lives (and yes, our writing processes), it’s crucial to use them responsibly, especially in the high-stakes world of college admissions. At College Essay Advisors, we’re committed to helping students tell authentic, human stories—so when it comes to using College EssAI (our proprietary tool created specifically for the purpose of helping students write winning college essays), or any AI tool, we recommend the following guidelines:

1. Don’t Pass Off AI-Generated Work as Your Own

Let’s be clear: submitting AI-generated content crosses an ethical line. While AI can help you brainstorm ideas, explore structure, and polish your prose, should not be a shortcut to authorship. Your voice matters. Admissions officers want to hear from you—the real, imperfect, wonderfully complex human being who’s applying. They’re not interested in what a machine has cobbled together from various corners of the internet.. (Unless you’re an actual cyborg. In which case…please contact us immediately. We have questions.)

2. Always Fact-Check and Review AI Output

AI can be helpful, but it’s not infallible. Tools like College EssAI are trained on vast swaths of data, and while they can be well-informed, they’re also not foolproof. Always review, refine, and verify any suggestions or edits you receive. You are the one and only expert on your story.

3. AI Can Support Accessibility—Use That Power Responsibly

We recognize that AI tools like College EssAI can lower barriers and make essay-writing guidance more widely available for students from a range of backgrounds with different learning needs, neurotypes, and counselor access. That’s something we’re proud of.

But ease of accessibility should never come at the expense of authenticity and honest, hard work. AI can be a great sounding board, but it doesn’t replace your own judgment. Stay alert to what feels right, what sounds like you, and what aligns with your values. Use your best critical thinking skills to assess any suggestions, and trust that your instincts and insights matter more than a machine’s.

4. Your Lived Experience Is the Heart of the Essay

No algorithm has walked in your shoes. Your story—complete with all its nuance, growth, and voice—is something only you can tell. That’s what colleges seek. Let College EssAI support your process, not substitute for it. The tool is here to help you express your truth, not invent a new one.

5. Stay Informed

The ethical use of AI in education is still evolving. Make it a habit to stay up to date on what’s changing in this space. Being an informed AI user isn’t just smart–it’s part of being a responsible digital citizen.

College EssAI is designed to guide students through the college essay writing process, it is not designed to generate writing or replace original ideas. We believe that thoughtful collaboration between humans and machines can create powerful results, but only if the human stays in the driver’s seat.

Use AI responsibly. Use it thoughtfully. And most importantly: use it to help you become a better, more organized, more reflective writer–not a copy-paste machine.
